Newtown Primitive Methodist chapel

Keith Guyler 1989

By Christopher Hill

The notes with Keith Guyler's photograph say that the chapel was opened in 1867 and closed in 1991.  I am however unable to find it on Google Street View in September 2011.  On thew Ordnance Survey map of 1945 Sheet 168 Winchester there is a chapel marked at Newtown Road, Awbridge SO51 0GJ and at that location there is a Chapel House but it doesn't look anything like the picture.  There is however a house being built next to it.  Is that where the chapel was?

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Chapel was demolished in about 1992, the intention was to replace it with a wooden one but in the end they decided the congregation size wasn't worth the effort. After some abortive attempts to get planning permission from Test Valley BC to build a house on the tiny site (plenty of stuff on the 'net about that) it has ended up being incorporated into the garden of Chapel House, at the same time as Chapel House was extended. The photo was taken at the Carters Clay road junction with Newtown Road, Chapel House is the other side of the chapel & the house next door to Chapel House, Providence Cottage, is in the background of the photo
