Walpole Highway Primitive Methodist chapel

Main Road Walpole Highway PE14 7QA

The pictured Walpole Highway Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1901.  It served until the 1970s and by the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph in 1989 it had been converted into a house.

The previous chapel, opened in 1860, was used as a Sunday school when the 1901 chapel opened. It stood alongside the new chapel, between the new chapel and the village shop. StreetView in 2023 shows it  has been demolished and the site is used for car parking.

On Google Street View in 2009 the 1901 chapel looks  in sound condition, but it is not clear whether lower windows are boarded up.

The chapel was subsequently converted to residential use – see the comments below.

  • I purchased and moved into The old Methodist chapel, Lynn road, Walpole highway in 2021. I would be very grateful if anyone could advise me on the best way to find any information about its history.

  • I live here and no windows are boarded up. Shame no one asked me as some pictures were before my wife died and some after. We changed it to our home.

  • This page was modified on 27 January 2017 to add a number of photographs supplied by Trevor Kent, including pictures of the exterior in different years, the school room to the right of the chapel and close up pictures of the foundation stones.

The pictures are in gallery format – click on each picture to see it alone on the page and a further click on the picture shows the original size.

  • These are the correct photo and map Christopher. I do have a black and white photo of the Sunday School which was located to the right hand side of the chapel also a rather poor colour photo of the name and date stone which was situated over the Sunday School door also photos of the foundation stones of the Chapel, but I cannot see a way to send them to you on this page. If you want them please advise.

  • Trevor,

Please e-mail the photos as pdf attachments to the Englesea Brook Museum at engleseabrook-methodist-museum@supanet.com. They will then be passed along to me to  upload onto the page.

  • The Photograph and Map show WALTON HIGHWAY Chapel not WALPOLE HIGHWAY.

  • Many thanks for correcting the original information on this page Trevor. I have changed the picture and map, and hope it is right now; if not, please let us know. If you have personal or family memories you would like to share about the chapel, that would be great.

I’ll add Walton Highway chapel picture and location on a new page shortly. You might also want to check that I haven’t confused either of the Highways with Walpole Marsh or Walpole Cross Keys!

  • Carol,

If you follow the link to My Methodist History you will find some old photos. A26 is labelled Beryl Pepper. Is that your aunt?

    By Geoff Dickinson (03/03/2016)
  • I used to go to Walpole Highway Church back in the ’60s. My aunt, Beryl Pepper, was a minister along with Win South. We lived in West Drove North. Our neighbours were Phil and Trevor Horsepole, Tony and Maureen Moses,  Onkie Pollen and many more.  What memories
