Lincoln Portland Place Primitive Methodist chapel

The current (2015) Lincoln Central Methodist Church in High Street was formerly Portland Place Primitive Methodist chapel. It was renamed Central in 1962 on amalgamation with Hannah Memorial. The building was designed in 1905 by Howdill & Sons of Leeds. It became grade 2 listed in 1999 when it was described as “Methodist church and adjoining Sunday school, theatre and meeting rooms.”
The first Primitive Methodist meeting place in central Lincoln dates from 1819 in a Sunday school in Hungate, Mint Lane. After a failed attempt to move to a nearby Baptist chapel, in 1839 land was purchased. Preachers at the opening services included H Bourne, J Bywater, W Sanderson, J Flescher, Mrs Longmires and Rev J Craps. Fundraising was the responsibility of Dr Simpson and Bro Jackson. Local MP CD Waldo Sibthorpe eventually gave £10.
The original Portland Place chapel was situated on Saint Mary’s Street. It was built in 1839, enlarged in 1854 and rebuilt in 1874.
The 1840 Primitive Methodist magazine contains a brief report by John Jackson of the opening of the chapel on Friday September 6th 1839 when the preacher was Mr J Harrison from Gainsborough. He must have been good a those attending “gave proof of their satisfaction , by contributing liberally to the collection”.

In 1884 my great grandparents, Charles Phillips and Mary Brown were married at this church.
Charles’ grandfather, Jeremiah, had built several churches in the Lincolnshire area. He is buried at Barlings, Lincolnshire with his wife.
Eventually Charles and Mary moved to Leicester where they died in 1934/5. My grandmother used to tell me about them when I was a little girl.
