Blyton Primitive Methodist chapel

Blyton Primitive Methodist chapels go back to 1822. Keith Guyler’s notes are a little confused about what happened later. At one point he says the first chapel was enlarged in 1840. He then gives the dates 1851 or 1861 for a later chapel, but queries whether it was built in 1840. The date 1865 is on the date stone; he wonders whether this was a further enlargement.

At the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph it was in use as the Victoria Social Club.

The third Blyton Primitive Methodist chapel known as Central opened in 1891 and was rebuilt in 1971.

  • I’ve added later pictures of Blyton chapels sourced by John Walley. They are included thanks to permission from Ken Redmore (Editor) of the South Lincs Local History & Archeology Society.

The datestone caused a bit of confusion; the third digit looks as if it has been cut out and recarved?

  • The SOCIETY FOR LINCOLNSHIRE HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY has a few mentions of Blytons chapels.

This builds on the question over dates as mentioned by Christopher (Keith Guyler)

When you look at the foundation stone image it looks as if the 3rd year digit has been cut out, a new section of stone inserted, then recarved as a “6”. The new stonemasons style is not the same as the original carving.

I have contacted the Lincs Society for approval to share the foundation stone image here. (25th Feb 2023)
