• I have a book “Epping Forest” by Henry Hawkins inscribed:
  “Presented to Lily Ward from the Primitive Methodist Sunday School Great Hale Christmas 1900”

  (and other items of the period).

  Lily married Fred Barber (son of Charles Barber of Langriville). She was my grandmother.

•  On a 25″ O.S. Map 1905  for Chapel Lane, Great Hale, Chapel cited has such “Meth. Chap. (Prim)”.

  The Wesleyan Chapel is further south west of the village.

  Ref. MLI89935: 3 Photographs of former Primitive Methodist Chapel, Chapel Lane, Great Hale. Alterations in 1906, year 1906 on arched ashlar stone over front door. Stone plaque date 1851 on the west gable. Closed 1963, now a home.

  Genuki website for Great Hale has a picture of the PM Chapel, it showing date of alterations in 1906, but not the side 1851 plaque.

• Thanks for correcting this Beverley – it’s easy to get it wrong. I’ll amend the page. I think the 1906 date for chapel enlargement does not relate to the Primitive Methodist chapel but comes from the original label on the Wesleyan chapel picture.

• The photo is of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in great Hale. We live next to it on Church walk. The primitive chapel is in Chapel Lane and is also now A house. I could e mail you a photo if it would help and of so let me know where to send.
