Family

John was born on 29 May 1797 at Birmingham, Warwickshire.

John married Rebecca Smith (1792-1837) on 13 December 1819 at All Saints, West Bromwich. They had six children

  • Mary Ann (1819-1843) – married Josiah Howard
  • Lydia (1823-1884) – married Charles Britland, a shoe blacking maker (1861) and, later, hawker (1871)
  • Ebenezer (1825-1852) – a PM Minister
  • Obadiah Oldham (1828-1889) -served as a PM minister between 1847 and 1870; he subsequently became a teacher and school board officer.
  • John Wesley (1831-1832)
  • Jabez Shrewsbury (1835-1900) – a railway porter; died in Union Workhouse, Ashton under Lyne

John married Betty Wrigley (1790-1840) on 6 June 1837 at St Mary, Oldham.

He married Charlotte Whittingham, nee Rushton (1801-1854) on 21 December 1842 at Manchester Cathedral.

He finally married Sarah Cheetham (1802-1883) on 24 April 1855 at Hope St Independent Chapel, Oldham.

John died on 22 September 1867 at Salford, Lancashire.
