Old Fen Lane (Offen Lane) Primitive Methodist chapel
Old Fen Lane, Scrub Hill LN4 4XD
In the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1839 John Jackson writes about the opening of what he calls Offen Lane Primitive Methodist chapel in the 1839 Primitive Methodist magazine. He tells us that the chapel opened on January 6th 1839 when the preachers were Bro Beckerlegge (that’s a name that crops up a lot in Primitive Methodism) and Bro Jackson.
The new chapel measured 27′(l) x 18′(w). Particular thanks were due to Mr. Thomas Daft who gave the land and to the farmers who gave most of the leading. The seats were all let.
I’ve spent ages trying to track down Offen Lane Primitive Methodist chapel. Thanks to Philip Thornborow for identifying it as Old Fen Lane chapel. Same sounding name (nearly) but different spelling
Old Fen Lane Chapel was near the hamlet of Scrub Hill in the civil parish of Wildmore, at its western boundary with the parish of Coningsby. The Primitive Methodist chapel at Old Fen Lane dates from 1839. It was rebuilt in 1857.
The chapel closed in 2004.

Often a interesting historical background can be compiled from studying Preachers Plans.
At the Lincolnshire Archives there are Preaching Plans that should include Old Fen Lane Chapel after the unification of all Methodist groups, i.e., Coningsby Methodist Circuit from 1933 to c.2004, Ref. M/A/1/20 (Coningsby).
Before unification Scrub Hill Primitive Methodist Chapel was under pastoral care and administration of the Horncastle Primitive Methodist Circuit, yet PM Preaching Plans we have not located (yet?). However, amongst records for the former Horncastle PM Circuit there are baptisms from c.1839 to 1932. These may be baptisms at PM Chapels within the circuit, or baptisms taking place at the main circuit PM Chapel. The ref. is Meth/B/Horncastle P/A/1/1 & 2.
Note: This PM Chapel was also known as Wildmoor Fen (Wildmore Fen) PM Chapel.
