Belper: Revival Intelligence: Belper Circuit 1838

From the Primitive Methodist Magazine, 1838

(Belper Circuit, 1838.)

At Belper we had for some time been labouring, praying, and believing.  On Sunday, March 4, 1838, we held a fellowship meeting in the morning; when the powers of darkness awfully opposed us.  But in the Lovefeast, in the afternoon, the Lord, whom we sought, suddenly came to his temple; and in the course of the day about twenty souls were brought into liberty.

Monday, March 5, was our Quarter day.  And at night, after two short sermons, we commenced a prayer meeting, and eleven more professed to find the Lord.

We have had in Belper this quarter, a clear increase of forty-two adults, besides forty-five children who meet in class.  To God be all the glory.

At Milford the work has been on the move; several conversions have taken place.  Also the friends here, in conjunction with the travelling preachers, have missioned Cow Hill, and there a class of twelve members has been formed, and is doing well.

Bole Hill has for some years resembled the valley of dry bones.  But of late the life-giving power of God’s Spirit has breathed on the society, and several conversions have taken place; and the congregation is considerably increased.

At Cromford a good work has been going on for sometime, especially among the young people.  The society, during the last twelve months, has increased from about twenty-five to about fifty-five.

At Selston the work has been exceedingly powerful, and is still going on.  Twenty-five have been converted this last quarter.  Truly the wilderness is become a fruitful field.

At Wirksworth our friends held a missionary meeting, January 28, 1838, and from that time the work began to revive.  And on February 27, they had a powerful band meeting, and six souls were brought into the liberty of the children of God.  And for several weeks conversions took place almost every time they met.  The society is increased from twenty-five to fifty; and they are building a commodious chapel.  To God be all the glory.  Amen.

Several other places in the circuit have partaken of the revival, although in a less degree.  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above what we can ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church, by Christ Jesus, throughout all ages, world without end.  Amen.
