Stickney Primitive Methodist chapel

The first Stickney Primitive Methodist chapel in the Boston circuit was built in 1831. It was however poorly built and became dilapidated.  After one service the roof fell in. Although the society was small, the people poor and there being outstanding debt on the first chapel, they engaged Mr Andrews of Stickford to build a new chapel, which was completed in 1852.

Money was raised by all sorts of means, including begging cards. They were so successful that by the time they had finished, they owed no more than the original debt on the first chapel. Particular donations came from J Stanhope MP, Mr Eno of London and Messrs Atkinson and Homes of Stickney and Clipsham of Boston.

The congregations were much improved.

An account of the opening by John Dickenson is set out in the Primitive Methodist magazine of September 1852. It does not give a specific date.

The 1882 Primitive Methodist magazine tells us they were starting work on  a new Primitive Methodist chapel at Stickney to replace the previous smaller one. The new chapel would hold 150 and was expected to cost £200.

Stickney Primitive Methodist chapel is marked on Ordnance Survey maps until 1956. I can’t find it on Google Street View in 2017.  What happened to it?

  • On 15th January 1937 it was re-registered as an Assemblies of God mission hall with the name “Pentecostal Mission Hall”. Its registration was in turn cancelled on 13th August 1971, although it may well have fallen out of use before then. Its Worship Certificate states “(Primitive Methodist Chapel formerly) now Pentecostal Mission Hall”.
