Gedney Drove End Primitive Methodist chapel was opened on 18/05/1834 and there is an account in the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1834 written by William Hardwick. The preacher at the opening was MR Cork and the chapel measured 18′(w) x 24′(l).

The chapel was re-opened after further work on October 3rd 1847.  The article is written by J Buinn.

The Google Street View shows a former Primitive Methodist chapel in Marsh Road, Gedney Drove End, just north of the junction with Marsh Lane.  It is located at OS grid reference TF4644029190 and this is the address above. The building still carries the date stone for 1885.

  • Thanks for the correction Sean. I’ve amended the postcode.
It would be good to add a picture or two to the page; if that is possible please send as an email attachment to enquiries@engleseabrook.org.uk.
Hope you enjoy living in the chapel!

  • Please note the postcode is PE12 9PJ as this is my home. 😊. Not sure what inside used to be like but am sure it has greatly changed.

  • For many years the first (1834) chapel was retained and used as a Sunday school for the 1885 chapel. They stood opposite each other, hence both show on some old O/S maps. The ‘new’ chapel was built by Wm Jepson of Spalding for £250 on land given by a Mrs Slator. Her husband made and donated all bricks used in its building. A vestry extension was added later. The word ‘Primitive’ on the date-stone was removed following Union. The chapel has long been converted to a residential dwelling and retains its original exterior appearance..

  • Lincolnshire Archives, Lincoln,

Ref. MLI97682: Amongst a short history there are photographs of the former PM Chapel, but the plaque has had alteration, i.e., the top word ‘Primitive’ has been removed/obscured. On enlargement of one photo this can be concluded, also mentioned in the text.
