Early years

William was born on 11 October 1810 at Scotter, Lincolnshire, to parents James Luddington and Ann Pears. He was baptised on 12 October 1810 at Scotter. William gave his heart to God in the spring of 1829 during a glorious revival at Scotter. He soon became a local preacher and then entered the itinerant ministry.

Ministry

At the start of his ministry, William had a season of discouragement, the temptation to return to home and his former occupation was too strong for him. However, in 1836, he again became a travelling preacher.

He was exceedingly conscientious and upright, and disliked intensly any meaness or deception. His religion was manly, robust, and thoroughly practical. Though excitable and somewhat sharp and hasty, he had little of the gloomy or morose in his temperament, and walked on the sunny side of life’s pathway.

His preaching partook largely of the revivalistic in style and he was always at home in a thoroughly hearty prayer meeting.

Family

William married Ann Penny Stones Broadbent in 1838 in the Gainsborough Registration District. Records identify three children.

• Jane (1840-1919) – married John Thomas R Wade, a grocer.
• William Broadbent (1843-1888) – PM Minister and missionary to Fernando Po
• Ann Elizabeth (b1846)

William died on 20 January 1881 at Sileby, Leicestershire.
