Tholomas Drove Primitive Methodist chapel

Tholomas Drove is a hamlet 2 miles south-west of Wisbech St. Mary. Before they built a new chapel, the Tholomas Drove Primitive Methodist society had met for the best part of twenty five years in the upper floor of a granary, which they had to access by way of a ladder. In 1854 they made extensive changes, converting the granary to a chapel and two cottages. It had a boarded floor and accommodated 110 people.

An account by J Seager of the opening can be found in the Primitive Methodist magazine for February 1855. Three sermons were preached at the opening on “Sunday, December 10th, 1854, by Mr. Smith, of Wisbech, to large congregations. On the following Monday a gratuitous tea was provided, after which a public meeting was addressed by Messrs. J. Seager, J. Walker, W. Smith, and W. Starbuck.”

The chapel is still marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 map of 1902; it is not marked on the 1945-47 one inch map. I can’t see any sign of it on Google Street View.
