Hindon Grange Primitive Methodist chapel

Thornley circuit - but where?

The opening of the Primitive Methodist chapel at Hindon Grange in the Thornley (County Durham) circuit is reported in the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1865.

I cannot find the location of Hindon Grange, let alone the chapel. Thornley is a village to the east of Durham city. The Thornley circuit in 19009 contains places such as Haswell, Shotton Colliery, Horden Colliery and Wheatley Hill.

“Chapel Opening, Hindon Grange, Thornley Circuit.—At this place we have for several years worshipped in a colliery school-room, and during that time have been subjected to much inconvenience and annoyance. Our friends at length resolved to arise and build a new place which they could regard as specially the “house of God.”

The chapel is 13 yards long by 11 outside, and 15 feet from the floor to the ceiling. It is built of brick, and covered with blue slate. It has four circular-headed windows, with a porch and iron palisading. It has 94 letable pews, and 200 free sittings. The cost, including stone, connexional Trust Deeds, etc., will be about £240.

It was opened on October 1st, 1864, when a public tea was held in the chapel. The proceeds of the tea amounted to more than £8. After tea the meeting was addressed by the Rev. J. Waite, and Messrs. J. Daglish, J. Julyan, H. Walton, G. Clarke, R. Hope, and Mr. Inlip (Wesleyan), in the chair. On the Sabbath, October 2nd, Mr. J. Daglish preached in the morning and evening, and the Rev. J. Waite in the afternoon. The congregations were good, and £3 15s. lOd. were collected.

We have raised £110 up to the present. We are expecting a donation from the colliery owners, and within a few months we hope to raise a sum that will leave us with only £100 debt on promissory note. The sittings are all let, and the Sunday-school is prospering. J. Waite”
