Haswell Plough PM Chapel may, in the past, have been called Haswell Moor PM Chapel.

In September 2013 the building had been converted into a very attractive private dwelling.

  • I’ve been trying to see if this is called Haswell Terrace or Plough, both have been is use since the 12th century. The name changes between the two on OS maps, even the local history group uses Terrace or Plough.

Did it depend on what side of the high street you lived on, the terraces are the SW corner, the Plough is over the road in the NW corner and took its name from the Plough Farm and Plantation.

All of no importance (unless you are a local), as we have the correct chapel at the correct location & photograph.

The village had three parts originally,

    Haswell
    Haswell Plough
High Haswell (the original village, now farmland)

  • Just a comment to support Judith Parker and the chapel names in Haswell

The chapel on this page is Haswell Terrace
NZ37327 42087 and converted to a private house.

Haswell Moor PM chapel. NZ38506 41584 was demolished and is now a modern detached house.

A third PM Chapel in Haswell itself is demolished and is now an open field NZ37235 42925.

This is all from old maps using the local names at that time, as time moves on place names change, it adds a bit of a challenge for the website admins, when they have to cross check facts before making posts public.

There is a Plough Inn in Haswell Terrace, a short walk from the PM Chapel, so a local name?

  • This page formerly contained a picture submitted by Dennis Pooley of a celebration outside a Methodist chapel. Because the picture has been identified as showing the Wesleyan Methodist chapel, it has been removed for transfer to the My Wesleyan Methodists site.

  • The chapel in Mr. Pooley’s photograph is clearly labelled ‘Wesleyan’

    The photograph is shown here

and reported to show the centenary of the Wesleyan chapel in Haswell in 1949(?)

  • This was my ‘home’ church from 1940s – it was previously known as Haswell Terrace not Haswell Moor.
