The return from the Primitive Methodist chapel in New Cassop to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship was completed by the minister, Henry Phillips. He reported average attendance of 150 in the afternoon service and 160 in the evening service, together with 40 afternoon scholars and 45 evening ones.

The chapel was erected in 1842 and held 220 people.
