Sunderland New Silksworth Primitive Methodist Chapel

Paul Watson has spotted a Primitive Methodist Chapel in New Silksworth.

It is marked on the 1895 Ordnance Survey 25″ map on the northern side of the junction of Stewart Street and Seaham Street. The area then is shown as terraced housing, but the whole area has been redeveloped since then.

The chapel is still there by the 1939 map.  Street View in 2021 shows the area in  as the edge of a playing field.

The chapel was part of the Sunderland First circuit.  On the Plans pages of this site you can see who would be preaching at New Silksworth and who was involved with the chapel. For example, in 1878, the chapel steward was Mr J Boyd of 16 Front Street.  In 1921 it was Mr  W Laverick of 8 Somerset Street and Mr J Kirtley..

Tyne and Wear Archives holds records for what it calls Seaham Street Methodist Chapel, New Tunstall until 1964.
