Birchover Primitive Methodist Chapel Derbyshire

This chapel was built in 1867

Porch erected in 1928

The chapel is in Upper Town Lane in the village of Birchover. A porch was added to it in 1928.

Date of closure is unknown. In October 2014 the building had been converted into a house and was up for sale.

  • I have researched the chapel. It was built in 1867 and at that time consisted of the left hand side of the present building and the porch joined to where the window is now. The congregation was a regular 90 people and so the chapel was extended in 1928, with the right hand side of the building being added and the porch moved to its current position.

    A regular Sunday School attendance of 40-50 children at the start of the 20th Century sadly dwindled, as did the congregation, until in the late 1980s, the Sunday School was minuted as being “small”, with only 20 people forming the congregation. The chapel is recorded as being in need of extensive repairs far beyond the means of the trustees and so a decision was made in October 1992 to dissolve the chapel. It was eventually sold in 1994.
