Brassington Primitive Methodist Chapel, Hillside Avenue, Brassington, Derbyshire, DE4 4HL

This chapel was built in 1834 on a plot of 70 square yards bought for £3. The plot was extended by a purchase of more land in 1864. It was formerly part of the Wirksworth Primitive Methodist circuit, the Wirksworth and Winster Primitive Methodist circuit, and latterly the Wirksworth Methodist circuit.

The chapel ceased and is now a private residence, Chapel House. The former chapel is a listed building, grade 11, with coursed limestone rubble with quoins, gritstone dressings and a plain tile roof.  It is a rectangular building with an entrance porch to the west, and the north elevation has two round headed windows with wooden shutters. There is no obvious denominational stone on view.

I last preached here in 1981 and the chapel was then still using the Primitive Methodist hymnbook–the welcome greeting was, “We still use the Primitive Methodist hymn book here. We’ve never got round to the 1932 one, and now they are talking about another.” Old habits die hard in Brassington.
