Derby Mount Street Primitive Methodist chapel

Mount Street Chapel (as depicted in Kendall)

Derby Mount Street chapel was in the Derby Traffic Street Circuit. It was located off Mill Hill Lane on the western edge of what is now Derby. The chapel had been given the name ‘Mount Zion.’

The site was designated as needing to be compulsory purchased by Derby Corporation to allow for extension to the Technical College. So a new site was purchased on Blagreaves Lane.

The last service in the old chapel on May 31 1939 with the members being reminded that “Our church will disappear from Mount Street, but another will arise to proclaim the Gospel in a new area.”

The official opening of the new chapel– called Newmount- took place on Saturday December 16 1939. A further development was opened in September 1965.
