Twenty years after erection the chapel was enlarged for the first time. Until the mid 1950s it catered for the families of labourers but when the social make up of the area changed so did the chapel. In 1962 the chapel was partly reconstructed and enlarged and in 2013 it was extended again at the back. In 2015 it has a beautiful worship space. It is a thriving church with an ageing congregation.

  • The Dore Graveyard Controversy occurred in 1876. It achieved national publicity. A baby died but had only been baptised by the PM minister Rev W Whitby, but on checking, the baptism had not been entered in the baptism register. A compromise was reached whereby Rev Whitby would read the PM burial service whilst standing on a chair opposite the open grave standing on the adjacent turnpike road! The grave was not however ready in time and so all adjourned to the PM chapel for the service.. The coffin was carried back by four young boys, and eventually to a distraught family the priest read the Anglican funeral service as well.
This case pushed the need for burial reform with the 1880 Morgan Burial Reform bill.

  • Hello,
We are clearing out my parents attic and have found a decorative trowel which was apparently used to lay the foundation stone for the Dore Chapel.

The inscription reads “Presented to John Roberts Esq on laying the Foundation Stone on the primitive methodist chapel, Dore. November 1860.

Would this be something that you would be interested in? Regards
