Houghton Primitive Methodist chapel
Chesterfield circuit: Stony Houghton NG19 8TR
The Primitive Methodist magazine for 1829 contains an account by John Woolley of the opening of Houghton Primitive Methodist chapel.
The society first worshipped in the home of Mr & Mrs Crook and then obtained permission to erect a chapel on common land belonging to the Duke of Devonshire. The new chapel measured 18′(w) x 24′(l).
Mr & Mrs Crook donated £50. There was a small Sunday school to which the the Duke gave 20 bibles and 20 prayer books.
The chapel was opened on Sunday 19th August 1827 when John Woolley was the preacher.
Where was Houghton near Chesterfield? There is nowhere I can find simply called Houghton. It cannot be New Houghton as that was not built until 1890 to accommodate workers in the nearby pit. It is most likely Stony Houghton. The 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map for 1876 shows a Primitive Methodist chapel. On the 1898 map it is marked as disused. It has disappeared by 1916.
