Shirley Primitive Methodist Chapel

Derbyshire

The 1851 religious census included a return for a Methodist chapel, which reads as follows: “erected out of a dwelling house in 1841: separately and exclusively used: accommodating 60. This chapel is occupied by the Wesleyan reformers every Sunday afternoon, by the Primitives in the evening.” Return submitted by Joseph Goodall, steward, Shirley.

This appears to be a different building from the 1855 Wesleyan chapel, in Mill lane, that was demolished at the end of the twentieth century. White’s County Directory for 1857 says of Shirley “The Primitive Methodists and New Connexion have each a chapel here. The former built in 1842, and the latter in 1855.”
