Wormingford Primitive Methodist chapel

Wormingford Primitive Methodist chapel was built in 1897 closed in (probably) the late 1960s.  Martin Broom who gave us the information about the chapel believes it was a ‘tin tabernacle’ although on the 1940 Statistical Return of all Methodist buildings it is shown as a wooden building.

The 1923 Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 map shows the chapel located at the southern end of Garnons Chase, where it joins the B1508 at what was labelled Chapel Corner.  It is not clear from the maps which building was actually the chapel but in 1961 there is the label Wormingford Methodist church, at the north eastern sector of the junction.

There is modern housing on the site on Street View.

  • One feature of the church was that the offering was counted during the service, on the front pew!! If the sermons were thought to be unduly long the Steward would exclaim ‘Amen and about time too!’
Happy memories of preaching there until 1969 when the chapel closed. At the end there were two members remaining, with one adherent, two ladies from Colchester (one to run the Sunday school and one to play the organ) and the preacher, meaning that there were always six at worship!
