The 1851 census of Places of Public Religious Worship contains a return for Primitive Methodists meeting in a room in a private dwelling house in Spittal (sic). The room held 40 and there were 19 people present on the evening of the census.
Although the society had no officers at the time, the return was completed by Samuel Lillycrop of 5 Adelaide Terrace.
