A Primitive Methodist preaching place in Shawclough submitted a return to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship.
The place accommodated 90 people ; In the morning of Census Sunday 31 Sunday school scholars attended; in the afternoon 33 attended the Sunday school and 31 a service, and in the evening 45 people attended a service.
The return was completed by Abel Lord Butterworth, the secretary.
