There are 34 chapel openings, re-openings and foundation stone layings listed in the 1851 volume.

A chapel was certainly needed at Thurston Magna which was “proverbial for wickedness; moral darkness and vice of almost every kind prevailed to an awful extent.”

At West Cramlington the society had previously met in an upstairs room – so small the “poor children were parboiled in it”.
