Blackburn Branch Road Primitive Methodist chapel 1890

Montague Street (Branch Road)

The foundation stones for Branch Road Primitive Methodist chapel in the Blackburn First circuit were laid in 1890. The new chapel would replace  a building described as  small, badly lighted and inconvenient and was better suited to meet the needs of worship and education.

It would cost £2,000 of which they had raised half.

The current Branch Road is in south Blackburn off Bolton Road. I cannot find a chapel of any denomination on Branch Road on historic Ordnance Survey maps.  Where was it and what happened to it?

That said, Lancashire Online Parish Clerk reports 6 Primitive Methodist chapels in Blackburn:-

  • Eccles St Primitive Methodist
  • Grimshaw Park Primitive Methodist
  • Salisbury St Primitive Methodist
  • Ebenezer Primitive Methodist
  • Oxford St Primitive Methodist
  • Zion Primitive Methodist

  • Wrong “Branch Road”, Montague Street was originally known as Branch Road.
