The return from the Primitive Methodist chapel in St George, Manchester, to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship dates the chapel from 1823. It seated 353 and on Census Sunday had attendance of 285 in the morning and215 in the afternoon. There were 138 morning scholars and 159 afternoon scholars.
The return was completed dy the minister, William Howcroft, of 63 Every Street, Ancoats.
