Newchurch Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1850.  When it opened the average attendance was 100 at both afternoon and evening services.  Attendance at both the morning and afternoon Sunday school was 50 scholars.

The return from the Primitive Methodist chapel to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship was completed by Robert Simpson, one of the deacons.
