Penwortham Primitive Methodist chapel opened in 1837.  It held 144 people and on Census Sunday the attendance was 25 in the morning and 30 in the evening, a few below the normal attendance.  There was also a Sunday school with 40 scholars in the morning and 10 in the evening.

The return from the Primitive Methodist chapel to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship was completed by Richard Harrison, the steward, who was a farmer of Longton Moor Side
