  • The History of Marsden and Nelson by Walter Bennett says that in 1828 Marsden (later called Nelson after the Lord Nelson pub) was a preaching place on the Burnley circuit. In 1835 the mission took a house at 2 Bradley Row – in the centre of what is now Nelson – for their services. They were joined by families who had left the Wesleyan Society and built a chapel in Bradley Road. It measured 12 yards by 8 yards and cost £190. It opened in 1843. It can be seen on the OS 1844 survey https://maps.nls.uk/view/102343931#zoom=7&lat=7040&lon=10048&layers=BT

When the membership reached 28 with 100 Sunday school scholars, they moved to the chapel in Scotland Road in 1879. This appears to be the Zion chapel on the OS 1910 revision https://maps.nls.uk/view/126517058#zoom=6&lat=8640&lon=9384&layers=BT. It closed in 1966 and was later demolished.

The Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society website suggests that the Bradley Road chapel was called Ebenezer and later – perhaps when it moved – became Zion. It also lists other Primitive Methodist chapels in Nelson. https://www.lfhhs-pendleandburnley.org.uk/church/xnel1.htm#Nelson%20-%20NEL.PM.02
