Todmorden Castle Street Primitive Methodist chapel

The  opening in 1887 of “a more commodious building ” at Castle Street in the Knowlwood station is recorded in the Primitive Methodist magazine. The new premises included not just a chapel, but also a schoolroom and three classrooms. They replaced an earlier chapel of 1832.

Castle Street is an area of Todmorden . It is east of the town along the River Calder Valley and grouped with Cinderhill Mills.  The chapel is marked on Ordnance Survey maps in 1907 but has disappeared from the 1963 map. It was located on the northern Halifax Road, just east of Cinderhill cotton mills.

  • Primitive Methodist ministers would have looked after a number of churches in a Circuit for a number of years, and then move on. Most of the preaching would be done by local preachers – non-ordained church members. The timetable of who was due to preach in which chapel would be published regularly: Methodists called this time table a plan. There are some circuit plans on this site, but not one for Todmorden circuit.

There is however a guide to finding out about Primitive Methodist people here.
