Appleby Primitive Methodist chapel

Risby Road Appleby DN15 0AE

Appleby Primitive Methodist Society dates from 1830. The second Appleby Primitive Methodist chapel dates from 1894 and it was replaced in 1906. It served until 1981 after which it was sold.  It then became houses from 1985.

Why did the 1894 chapel need replacing in 1906?  The answer comes in the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1903 which tells us that “Not long ago, through the bursting of a water main, the chapel was wrecked”.  The were trying to see this as a positive – that they would be able to build “a better building in a more eligible situation.”

  • I’ve added photographs of the former Appleby Primitive Methodist chapel taken by Pat Donnor; thanks Pat. Pat comments that the former chapel is now a much loved house, appreciated for the very fact that it had been a Chapel.

Thanks to the current owners for the early picture of the Chapel.
