Chapel St Leonards Primitive Methodist Chapel dates from May 1836. Writing in the Primitive Methodist magazine, John Coulson tells us that opening preachers were Bros. Buttery, Horner and Stamp. Mr Briggs, a member, gave the land and supervised the building, which was enlarged a few weeks after opening.

The chapel was enlarged in 1954.

At the 1851 religious census, the average congregation in the chapel, including the Sunday school children, was 80 at the morning service, 180 in the afternoon, and 160 in the evening, although the village population was only 300.

An account of the foundation and growth of the Chapel is on the East Lincolnshire Methodists website.

Thanks to Ray and Marie Ella for the information that Lincolnshire Archives, Lincoln has the following records relating to this chapel:

Ref. MLI98909: Primitive Methodist Chapel, St. Leonards Drive, Chapel St. Leonards, built 1836 to seat 157, re-roofed in 1900.

In 2023 the Chapel was still open for Sunday worship. The Chapel building has changed little since 1994 when Keith Guyler took his photograph.

The 2023 photographs were taken by Elaine and Richard Pearce.

  • John Stamp gives a detailed chronological account in his 1836 journal:

Feb 13 Went to a very wicked village called Chapel situate close by the sea. It has been one of the dark corners of the earth-the church shut up 10 years without preaching.
Wed 17 Went round the village, begged for land and near £20 and all the leadings (? ).
Mon 29 Went to chapel to lay the foundation stone of the new Lord’s House. Mrs. Stamp spoke on this occasion.
April 3 Assisted at the opening of the chapel at the village called Chapel. Next morning let all the sittings for the year.
Oct 9 The trustees determined to enlarge the chapel.
