  • Ref. MLI92231: Unlocated Site of Primitive Methodist Chapel, close to Freiston Shore, or Freiston:

A Primitive Methodist Chapel is recorded in the Census of Religious Returns as having been built in Freiston in 1838. The return was made by the chapel steward of Freiston Shore and a Primitive Methodist Chapel is mentioned by Thompson as being erected close to Freiston Shore in 1838. This chapel could accommodate around sixty persons and there were ten children attending the Sunday School which was attached to the chapel.

It is also mentioned in P. Thompson’s Histories & Antiquities of Boston, 1856 ed. P. Thompson mentions close to Freiston Shore.

The chapel was part of the Boston PM Circuit 1838-1869.

Comments about this page

  • This chapel originally had two pages – one spelled Freiston Shore and one spelled Frieston Shore. This is now the single page.

The other page had further information to Peter Gilbert’s comment referencing the 1839 Primitive Methodist magazine (page 459), which includes an account by Jeremiah Gilbert of the opening of Frieston Shore Primitive Methodist chapel in the Boston circuit.

The new chapel which measured 21′(l) x 18′(w) was opened on August 12 1838 and opening preachers included J Gilbert, T Worrill, W Leeke, J Richards and T Tennant . Mr Handley MP gave a sovereign as did William Simpson , a pious fisherman. Mr Bates , a gentleman bather, paid for the land and influenced others to give.

The new society had 13 members.

There might be a link to the United Methodist Free Church society and chapel at Scrane End, which is just down the road from Freiston Shore.

I cannot find a Primitive Methodist chapel in Freiston Shore on late Nineteenth Century Ordnance Survey maps available to me. Where was it and what happened to the society?
