The first Kirton Skeldyke Primitive Methodist chapel dates from 1842. After closure it was demolished.
The replacement chapel dates from 1908 and it served until 1956. It was sold in 1958 and was then used as a store. At the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph it was being converted into a house - The Old Chapel.

It’s about becoming respectable Victor. When Primitive Methodists first built places for their worship they called them chapels, to distinguish them from the parish church . In a village, there was a very clear class difference between the farm labourers who went to chapel and their betters who went to the parish church. Over time, the Prims became more respectable and their chapels became known as churches. By 1908 they were calling the buildings churches: I think there was a formal policy change at some point..
That said, in a village like Kirton Skeldyke, they would still be referred to locally as the chapel, which is why I put the heading on this page. Have a look at the Coleorton page where the 1839 chapel and 1901 church stand next to each other.
As the owners of this chapel there is a discrepancy as to whether it is a Chapel as the inscription reads Primitive Methodist Church . not Chapel. it was completed as the stone inside reads July 30th 1908.

Ref. MLI91917: Photographs of this Chapel. On one when enlarged the word Primitive can just be seen but hard to make out other words. The inscription is on the arch of the large middle window. There is a mention that the main Chapel is adjacent to annexes, presumably the building on the right.
