Westborough Primitive Methodist chapel

Bennington Ln, Westborough NG23 5HG

The Primitive Methodist magazine for March 1853 contains an account by James Hurd of the opening of Westborough Primitive Methodist chapel in the Bottesford circuit.

The paragraph heading of the article actually says “OPENING OF WESTBROOK CHAPEL” but even though the names Westbrook and Westborough are each used only once, I think it must be Westborough because I can’t find a Westbrook near Bottesford and there is there is a village called Westborough near Grantham.

The new chapel was opened from January 23rd 1853. Opening sermons were preached by Brothers Carthy of Ilkeston and Daykin of Grantham. 140 people attended the opening tea meeting addressed by Brother Neal of Grantham and  by Brothers Carthy, Daykin and Kitchen.

The chapel measured 19′ x 23′ and 14 high, was built of brick with a blue slate hipped roof and located on an elevated site. It cost £89/10 of which £30-£40 had been raised. Particular thanks were due to Mr Gilbert for the sale of the land at a nominal price; Mrs Gilbert who raised nearly £30; to Messrs Jolmson and Copley for carrying the materials free of charge.

The chapel did not last too long; on the 1888-9 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map it is marked as disused .  On the 1905 map it is marked as St Mary’s RC church. By 1975 there are council houses on the site.
