Gayton Thorpe Primitive Methodist chapel dates from 1902. It accommodated 50 people.
Norfolk Records Office has chapel records up until 1974. At the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph in 1987 he describes it as derelict.
On the 1946 one inch Ordnance Survey map the chapel is clearly located just inside a patch of woodland on the minor road to the north of the village. On Google Street View in 2009 and on Google Earth it is not possible to see it. It is likely to be now so overgrown it is not visible from the road.

John Arthur Leafe was the minister at Gayton Thorpe from 1929-32, when it was in the King’s Lynn circuit, which should help date the membership card. He was born in 1900, and began his ministry in 1923.

Thank you for the information about John Arthur Leafe. Do you know anyone by the name of Overson: Edward, Eliza or Annie (presumed the daughter or grand-daughter)? I have these two leather bound hymnals with inscriptions. I’d be willing to return to the family if appropriate.

I have two hymnals, one inscribed: Edward Overson, Gayton Thorpe, the other: Eliza Overson, A Present from her Dear Father. There is also a GTPM membership card for Annie Overson, signed by the Minister: J.A.Leafe (or Lease, or similar). No dates, but from handwriting assume late 1800s to early 1900s. Please have you any information about this family?
