The memorial stones for Mitcham Primitive Methodist chapel in the Swaffham Station were laid in 1886. The society had met for around 40 years in an old carpenter’s shop fitted out for the purpose.
Land was purchased in the village by the society steward, Mr JS Mantripp and he gave the church a site. The foundation stones were laid by Mr Mantripp and his wife.
I have the slight technical problem of not knowing where Mitcham is. Neither Google or, more significantly, the Ordnance Survey can find it. It could well be – at a time of handwriting – a transcription error for Flitcham where there was also a Primitive Methodist chapel dating from 1885. That chapel still exists as a holiday let.
