Norton Subcourse Primitive Methodist chapel

The first Norton Subcourse Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1864. It was replaced in 1900 by the chapel in Keith Guyler’s 1986 photograph.  The first chapel then became a house.

Immediately after the photograph, in April 1988 the 1900 chapel became the Rural Ecumenical Centre at a cost of £27,000.

It is still active as Norton Subcourse Methodist church in 2015.

The opening of the first chapel is recorded in the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1865.

Chapel Opening, Norton, Yarmouth Circuit.—We have just completed and opened for public worship a beautiful, substantial brick and stone chapel and school-room, at Norton, at a cost of £200.

The chapel is 38 feet by 23 inside, and 14 feet from the floor to the wall-plate : the school-room is 30 feet by 10, and will open into the chapel when needed. The edifice stands in the centre of the village, and is very convenient.

It was opened on the 2nd, 3rd, and 9th of October. Sermons were preached by the Revs. R. Key, E. Blake, Messrs. G. T. Goodrick and G. Bell. The collections, including the profits of the tea-meeting, were £22. This makes the total amount raised £80, which we intend to make £100 in a few weeks.

The lovers of our Zion will be glad to hear, that this is the fourth connexional chapel opened on this circuit in fifteen months ; we have now twenty-three in all, and three day schools, with a good prospect of success. E. Blake.”
