Coldfair Green Primitive Methodist chapel

The Common, Knodishall IP17 1UZ

Coldfair Green in the Kelsale branch of the Wangford circuit was first missioned around 1841-3.  Although they met with some success they want ed somewhere appropriate to meet.  The lord of the manor granted them a plot, but he died before it was realised; a friend bought a plot but that was in a poor position; it took until 1853 to acquire a suitable plot.

The foundation stone was laid on Whit Monday and the chapel opened on July 28th 1853. It measured 30′ x 21′, was built of red brick, accommodated 150 and cost £87/14/1, of which they had raised £30. There is an account of the opening of Cold-fair Primitive Methodist chapel in the October 1853 edition of the Primitive Methodist magazine, written by George Stacey.

Ebenezer Primitive Methodist chapel in Coldfair Green is marked on the 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map of 1882. By 1971 it is labelled Knodishall Methodist church. The current church buildings seen on Street View seem newer and is not quite in the same place as the earlier building.  What’s the story?

Knodishall Methodist church is still active in 2017.

  • I visited this site yesterday. The original building has been let out and is in good condition. The current Church was built facing the original building with a grassed area between presumably for parking. My interest is from the start up to 1900. My great grandfather and wife were actively involved in the Sunday School about 1900 according to Ipswich RO records. I have been unable to track down baptism records yet, the names were Scarlett and Bloomfield.
