Bellmott Primitive Methodist chapel

(possibly) Anslow Road Hanbury DE13 8TX ?

The Primitive Methodist magazine of 1830 contains an account by Thomas Butcher of the opening of Bellmott Primitive Methodist chapel in the Burton on Trent circuit.  Opening services took place on Sunday 31st January 1829 when the preachers were Thomas Butcher himself and Joseph Peart.

The society was growing rapidly; over 18 months it moved from only 3 members to 30 and growing with 40 scholars in Sunday school.

The chapel measured 17′(w) x 22′(l) x 9′(h).

I have the slight problem of not being sure where Bellmott is, let alone the chapel. Belmott Gate and Belmot Road are south west of Tutbury, and the 1883 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map shows an isolated Primitive Methodist chapel on Anslow Road, on the site of the current Blackbrook farm.  Is this correct?  Is there any remaining evidence of the chapel?

  • Having spent some time reading this one I agree it was the Chapel that stood where Blackbrook Farm now stands just off Belmont Gate.
