Blaenavon Primitive Methodist chapel 1879

Broad Street

The Primitive Methodist Chapel in Broad Street, completed in the Gothic style in 1879, was undoubtedly Blaenavon’s most elaborate and largest chapel.

The 1877 Primitive Methodist magazine tells us that “our Welsh friends are proceeding with the erection of a beautiful and commodious chapel and school” at Blaenavon in the Pontypool station to replace the previous smaller Bethel chapel in King Street.

The size was the chapel’s undoing as congregations dwindled and aged in the second half of the twentieth century. Broad Street chapel closed in 1966 and was demolished in 1972.  The members joined those worshipping in Park Street.
