The 1878 Primitive Methodist magazine records the laying of the memorial stones for a new Primitive Methodist chapel at Dewsbury Road in the Leeds Fourth station.
Thanks to Colin Dews for more information:
“The boundary between Leeds Second and Leeds Fourth circuit was fixed as Dewsbury Road, Second being to the west and Fourth to the east. This then had a rapidly growing population with both circuits trying to establish new work in West Hunslet. The Fourth began to make progress on their side of the boundary and a Sunday school was formed but obtaining a site for new premises proved difficult and so land was acquired in the Second circuit’s territory. The Fourth appealed to the Second to do this but permission was not granted.
The Fourth finally acquired land on their side of the boundary in Oulton Street where a school-chapel to the designs of Thomas Howdill was opened in 1878. The cause did not prosper and soon closed, the remnant continuing at Pottery Fields until 1885. The premises became a political club and were demolished in the 1960s.”
