Middlesbrough Newport Primitive Methodist chapel

Newport Road

The foundation stones for a mission hall and Sunday school were laid in 1890 in Newport in the Middlesbrough station. Newport was a rapidly growing part of the town with a large iron works. One of the people who laid stones was the borough Mayor, R Scupham, whose brother had been a local preacher.

Ordnance Survey maps show a mission hall on Newport Street, between Orwell Street and Mills Street. It is labelled on the 1929 map and still in existence but unlabelled on the 1960 map.

The area has since been the site of major road development.
