Rotherham New York Primitive Methodist chapel
The first New York Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1859, but it was small and unsuitable, so in 1865 they sold it and built a new one in a better position. This was opened on November 19th 1865, seated 160 people and was the only place of worship in the neighbourhood.
The entire cost was £305 of which they had raised £126 and hoped to raise another £54. There was enough room for future enlargement.
T Baron tells us about the opening in the Primitive Methodist magazine.
I can’t find the chapel on old Ordnance Survey maps. The area, to the south west of the town centre, was formerly heavily industrialised, but has been redeveloped, including the new football stadium.
