The opening of the first Dukinfield Primitive Methodist chapel, in the Oldham circuit, is recorded by Samuel Atterby in the Primitive Methodist magazine.  The chapel was located at on the corner of Princess Street and what was later called Foundry Street..

It opened at Christmas 1836, with services being held on Sunday, Monday and Friday 25th 26th 30th December. and, to celebrate the new year, on & Sunday 1st January. Preachers were on the 25th Bro J Flesher, 25th and 26th  Bro S Atterby, 30th F N Jersey & January 1st Bro James Garner Bro S Chapman.

The new chapel measured 30′(w) x 36′(l) and was galleried on 3 sides.

C Hindley Esq. MP gave £20 and his lady the same. She also collected subscriptions. A Sunday school was connected with the chapel.

The return from Foundry Street Primitive Methodist chapel to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship was completed by the minister, Thomas Jobling. He tells us that the building, erected in 1836, held 226 people and on Census Sunday, the afternoon service attracted 87 people with 150 in the evening. The Sunday school, held in the afternoon, attracted 132 scholars.

The chapel disappears from Ordnance Survey maps between 1967 and 1978.  The whole area has been re-developed as housing.

  • I have a plate which commemorates the opening of the Sunday School of November 1913. My Grand parent George Clayton was a corn mill owner with his 2 brothers and I am guessing he was a contributor to the building.
