Transcription of Magazine ‘Sketch’

Mr A Pope is the Senior Circuit Steward of Bristol I. station. Born at Garndiffaith, Pontypool circuit, March 13th, 1852, he attended our Sunday School. Removing to Pontypool in 1862 he joined the church when seventeen, and a year later began to preach; for thirty-four years he has been a useful local preacher. Removing to Bristol in 1877 he joined our Whitehall society, and has rendered devoted and valuable service as Circuit Steward, Local Preacher, Society Steward, Choirmaster, president of the men’s Bible Class, and Treasurer of our new Church, a fine classical building, the centre of Christian activities of which our friend is one of the directing forces. Mr Pope has been greatly blessed in his wife, who is deeply interested in all church work. The three children are all members of the Church; one of them, Mr. J.E. Pope, a local preacher, has passed the intermediate B.Sc. London University.

Family and other information

Abraham was born in 1852 to parents Henry and Caroline. Henry was a labourer.

Abraham worked as an insurance agent.

Abraham married Ellen Evans (1857-1931) in early 1876 at Pontypool, Monmouthshire. Census returns identify four children.

  • James Henry (1877-1939) – a hotel manager (1911)
  • Sarah (1879-1882)
  • John Evans (b1883) – a schoolmaster; emigrated to South Africa
  • Lilian Mary (1886-1961) – married Frederick Jenkins, a cleaner labourer (1911)

Abraham died on 13 November 1926 at Bristol, Gloucestershire.
