Transcription of Magazine ‘Sketch’

For a quarter of a century Mr. W.H. Cooper, senior Steward of the Leeds Sixth Station, has had charge of the finances of the Circuit. Under his wise leadership they have been placed upon a sound and equitable basis, a deficit is a thing unknown. The income reported last quarter was £105 10s. 6d., and the station has the services of three ministers.

Mr. Cooper is one of the most efficient and acceptable local preachers. His great natural gifts have been diligently cultivated. His reading is regular and up-to-date. His temperament is that of a practical mystic. With a well stored mind, a good voice, a pleasing delivery, he is welcome in all our pulpits.

Mr Cooper is blessed in his home life. His wife and family are deeply interested in the work of our Church. We trust that for him and for his the best has yet to be.

Family and other information

William was born in 1857 at Wrockwardine Wood, Shropshire, to parents James and Margaret. James, was a miner.

William grew a business as a woollen and Worsted Cloth manufacturer at Wortley, Leeds, Yorkshire.

William married Maria Harris (1857-1926) on 25 December 1879 at Normanton Parish Church, Yorkshire. Census returns identify seven of eight children.

• Margaret Muriel (1883-1970) – married James Edward Walker, a builder
• Florence Edith (abt1885-1962)
• Elsie Louise (b abt1889) – married Leonard Arthur Wood in 1914
• William Stanley (1893-1953) – a manufacturer
• Gladys May (1896-1975) – married Wilson Ratcliffe, an engineer, in 1920
• Dorothy Harris (1902-1988) – married Harold Gerrard Kelley, a PM Minister

William died on 20 March 1929 at Leeds, Yorkshire. He left an estate valued in excess of £41,000.
