Few, Charles and Broad, J.
Hampshire local preachers
It comes as a surprise, reading circuit minute books from the 1830s to 1850s, how many preachers’ names are removed from the Plan for drunkenness or for unspecified “immoral conduct”. But a good deal stranger, to me, are entries like this one about Charles Few, from Micheldever’s quarterly meeting of December, 1838:
That Br. Charles Few go off the Plan, he being dead.
And perhaps even more quaintly, from Andover’s quarterly meeting (June, 1852):
That J. Broad’s name remain on the plan with a border around it being dead.
(I assume they were local preachers, though maybe they fulfilled some other rôle which got them on to the Plan. Also, the minute books sometimes degenerate into virtually illegible scrawl, but I hope I have got the spelling of their names right.)
